How to Calculate a Tip and Split a Bill Fairly: Etiquette & Math
Standard dining tip percentages, pre-tax vs post-tax calculation, per-person bill splitting, and group tipping etiquette.
The Etiquette and Expectations of Modern Tipping
In North America and several service-oriented economies, tipping is an integral component of a restaurant server’s livelihood. While tipping customs vary globally (in Japan, tipping can be considered rude; in much of Europe, a modest service charge or small coin round-up is customary), standard US dining expectations generally follow these benchmarks:
- 15%: Baseline for acceptable, standard table service.
- 18%: Standard for attentive, good dining service.
- 20%+: Excellent or exceptional hospitality.
- 10% or less: Reserved for substandard service (usually accompanied by speaking directly with management).
Should You Tip on the Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Total?
The traditional etiquette rule established by Emily Post and the James Beard Foundation is to calculate tips on the pre-tax subtotal of food and beverages. Tax is a mandatory government levy, not a service provided by the waitstaff.
However, many point-of-sale payment terminals calculate suggested percentages on the final post-tax total. On a $100 meal with 10% tax ($110 total), an 18% pre-tax tip is $18.00, whereas an 18% post-tax tip is $19.80. Either approach is socially acceptable, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal remains the formal standard.
The Group Bill Splitting Formula
To divide a shared restaurant tab equally among dining companions:
Step-by-Step Worked Example: Splitting a $120 Dinner for 4
Suppose 4 colleagues share dinner. The food and drink subtotal is $120.00, the group decides on an 18% tip, and sales tax is already included:
- Calculate tip: $120.00 × 0.18 = $21.60 tip.
- Calculate total bill: $120.00 + $21.60 = $141.60.
- Divide by 4 people: $141.60 ÷ 4 = $35.40 per person.
Each person contributes exactly $35.40 to cover the complete tab and tip.
Mental Math Shortcuts: How to Calculate Tips in Your Head
When paying without a smartphone:
- Calculating 20%: Move the decimal point one digit left to find 10%, then double it. On a $64.00 bill: 10% is $6.40 → double it to get $12.80.
- Calculating 15%: Find 10% ($6.40), take half of that ($3.20), and add them together: $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
- Calculating 18%: Estimate slightly below 20% or add 10% plus 8%.
