How to Convert Speed: mph, km/h, m/s, and Knots Explained

Distance over time conversion factors, highway speed limits, aviation and nautical knots, and physics calculations.

Understanding Speed (Distance Divided by Time)

Speed represents the rate at which an object covers distance over a given duration: Speed = Distance / Time. Because different domains measure distance differently (miles on American highways, kilometers across Europe, nautical miles at sea, and meters in physics laboratories), speed conversions are fundamental across travel, athletics, and science.

The Core Speed Conversion Factors

Standard conversion factors between international speed units:

  • 1 Mile per Hour (mph) ≈ 1.60934 Kilometers per Hour (km/h).
  • 1 Kilometer per Hour (km/h) ≈ 0.621371 Miles per Hour (mph).
  • 1 Meter per Second (m/s) = 3.6 Kilometers per Hour (km/h) ≈ 2.23694 mph.
  • 1 Knot (kn) = 1 Nautical Mile per Hour ≈ 1.15078 mph ≈ 1.852 km/h.

Worked Example 1: Converting Highway Speed Limits (mph to km/h)

Suppose an American tourist drives in Europe, where the motorway speed limit is posted at 120 km/h. What is the equivalent speed in miles per hour?

  1. Identify the conversion factor: 1 km/h ≈ 0.621371 mph.
  2. Multiply: 120 × 0.621371 = 74.56 mph.

A 120 km/h speed limit corresponds to approximately 75 mph.

Worked Example 2: Scientific Velocity (km/h to m/s)

In physics, the standard SI unit for velocity is meters per second (m/s). To convert km/h to m/s, use the shortcut: divide by 3.6 (since 1,000 meters / 3,600 seconds = 1 / 3.6):

Velocity (m/s) = Velocity (km/h) / 3.6

Convert 100 km/h to m/s: 100 / 3.6 = 27.78 meters per second. A car traveling at 100 km/h travels nearly 28 meters every single second.

Why Sailors and Pilots Use Knots

Aviation and maritime navigation universally use knots rather than mph or km/h because one nautical mile is historically defined as exactly one minute of latitude (1/60th of a degree) on Earth’s spherical coordinate grid.

This allows navigators to read nautical charts and plot distance directly using navigational dividers without needing mathematical unit conversions.
