How to Convert Volume: Liters, Gallons, Ounces & Cubic Meters

US liquid gallons vs UK imperial gallons, fluid ounces vs dry weight, culinary recipes, and cubic volume.

The Two Gallons Problem (US vs. UK Imperial)

One of the most confusing discrepancies in modern metrology is the definition of the gallon. If an American driver buys a “gallon” of gasoline, they receive a very different quantity than a British driver buying a “gallon” in the UK:

  • US Liquid Gallon: Legally defined as 231 cubic inches ≈ 3.78541 Liters.
  • UK Imperial Gallon: Defined as the volume of 10 pounds of distilled water at 62°F ≈ 4.54609 Liters.

An Imperial gallon is roughly 20% larger than a US liquid gallon. Always verify whether a specification or automotive fuel efficiency rating (MPG) refers to US or Imperial measurements.

Essential Volume Conversion Constants

Key relationships across metric, US customary, and cubic dimensions:

  • 1 US Gallon = 3.78541 Liters (or 1 Liter ≈ 0.264172 US Gallons).
  • 1 US Gallon = 128 US Fluid Ounces = 4 Quarts = 8 Pints = 16 Cups.
  • 1 UK Imperial Gallon = 160 UK Fluid Ounces ≈ 4.54609 Liters.
  • 1 Cubic Meter (m³) = 1,000 Liters ≈ 264.172 US Gallons ≈ 35.3147 Cubic Feet.
  • 1 Liter = 1,000 Milliliters (mL) = 1,000 Cubic Centimeters (cm³ / cc).

Fluid Ounces vs. Dry Weight Ounces

A common culinary and scientific error is confusing Fluid Ounces (volume) with Avoirdupois Ounces (weight/mass):

  • A fluid ounce measures three-dimensional space (1 US fl oz ≈ 29.5735 mL).
  • An ounce of weight measures gravitational mass (1 oz ≈ 28.3495 grams).
  • While 1 fluid ounce of pure water weighs very close to 1 ounce of mass (giving rise to the adage “a pint’s a pound the world around”), denser liquids like honey or lighter liquids like cooking oil weigh substantially different amounts per fluid ounce.

Worked Example: Converting Large Fluid Capacities

Suppose a residential swimming pool holds 15,000 US gallons of water. What is its capacity in cubic meters?

  1. Convert gallons to liters: 15,000 × 3.78541 = 56,781.15 Liters.
  2. Convert liters to cubic meters: 56,781.15 ÷ 1,000 = 56.78 m³.

The swimming pool contains approximately 56.8 cubic meters of water.
