How to Calculate and Simplify Ratios: Proportions & Scaling
Ratio notation, cross-multiplication for missing values, aspect ratios in screens, and recipe scaling.
What Is a Ratio and Proportion?
A ratio compares the relative quantitative relationship between two numbers, indicating how many times one number contains another. Ratios can be formatted in three standard notations:
- Colon notation:
A : B(e.g. 4 : 5) - Fraction notation:
A / B(e.g. 4/5) - Word notation: “A to B” (e.g. “4 to 5”)
A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal: A : B = C : D (or A/B = C/D).
How to Simplify a Ratio to Lowest Terms
Just like fractions, ratios should be simplified to their simplest integer form by dividing both sides by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD):
Worked Example: Simplify 24 : 36
- Find the factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.
- Find the factors of 36: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36.
- The largest shared factor (GCD) is 12.
- Divide both parts: 24 / 12 = 2, and 36 / 12 = 3.
- Result: 2 : 3.
Solving for an Unknown in Proportions (Cross-Multiplication)
When you have an equation where one value is unknown, use cross-multiplication (the product of the extremes equals the product of the means):
Worked Example: Solve for D in 4 : 5 = 20 : D
- Set up the proportion: 4 / 5 = 20 / D.
- Cross-multiply: 4 × D = 5 × 20.
- Simplify the right side: 4 × D = 100.
- Isolate D: D = 100 / 4 = 25.
The completed proportional relationship is 4 : 5 = 20 : 25.
Real-World Applications: Aspect Ratios & Recipe Scaling
Proportions govern countless daily situations:
- Screen Resolutions (Aspect Ratios): Modern displays use a 16:9 aspect ratio. If a video is 1080 pixels high, its width is (1080 × 16) / 9 = 1920 pixels (Full HD 1080p).
- Culinary Recipe Scaling: If a pancake recipe calls for 2 cups of flour to 3 eggs (2:3) to feed 4 people, feeding 10 people requires multiplying by 2.5: 5 cups of flour to 7.5 eggs.
- Map Scales: A map ratio of 1:50,000 means 1 centimeter on paper represents 50,000 cm (500 meters) in physical reality.
Common Mistakes to Avoid with Ratios
Avoid these two common mistakes:
- Comparing different units: Always convert both quantities to the same units before forming a ratio. A ratio of 2 feet to 18 inches is not 2:18; convert feet to inches (24 in to 18 in) to yield 4 : 3.
- Confusing part-to-part with part-to-whole: If there are 3 men and 4 women, the part-to-part ratio is 3:4, but the proportion of men to the whole group is 3:7 (approx 42.9%).
