How to Convert Area: Square Feet, Square Meters, Acres & Hectares
Two-dimensional unit math, real estate square footage, land acreage conversions, and international standards.
The Squared Conversion Rule (Why Area Math Catches People Off Guard)
When converting one-dimensional linear length (such as feet to meters), the conversion factor is straightforward: 1 meter equals approximately 3.28084 feet. However, when measuring two-dimensional area (width × length), you must square the conversion factor.
Because 1 m = 3.28084 ft, 1 m² = (3.28084 ft)² ≈ 10.7639 ft². People who mistakenly divide square feet by 3.28 underestimate metric room dimensions by more than two-thirds!
Essential Area Conversion Factors
Keep these fundamental constants handy for domestic, real estate, and agricultural calculations:
- 1 Square Meter ≈ 10.7639 Square Feet (or 1 sq ft ≈ 0.092903 sq m).
- 1 Acre = 43,560 Square Feet ≈ 4,046.86 Square Meters.
- 1 Hectare = 10,000 Square Meters ≈ 2.47105 Acres.
- 1 Square Kilometer = 100 Hectares ≈ 0.386102 Square Miles.
Worked Example 1: Real Estate Floor Plan (Sq Ft to Sq M)
Suppose an apartment listed in North America measures 1,200 square feet. What is its size in square meters for an international client?
- Identify conversion factor: 1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft (or 1 sq ft = 0.092903 sq m).
- Calculate area: 1,200 sq ft ÷ 10.7639 = 111.48 square meters.
A 1,200 sq ft apartment is approximately 111.5 square meters.
Worked Example 2: Land Acreage to Hectares
A rural property spans 25 acres. What is the equivalent area in hectares?
- Identify conversion factor: 1 hectare ≈ 2.47105 acres.
- Divide acreage by factor: 25 acres ÷ 2.47105 = 10.12 hectares.
Twenty-five acres corresponds to just over 10 hectares (or 101,171 square meters).
Fun Fact: Where Does the Size of an Acre Come From?
In medieval England, an acre was legally defined as the area of land a farmer could plow in one single day using a team of oxen. Specifically, it was defined as a strip of land one furlong (660 feet) in length by one chain (66 feet) in width: 660 × 66 = 43,560 square feet. This standard remains the legal unit of land measurement throughout the United States today.
