How to Calculate an Average: Mean, Median, and Mode Explained
Mathematical formulas, step-by-step dataset calculations, outlier effects, and when to use each measure.
What Does “Average” Really Mean?
In colloquial conversation, people say “the average” to describe what is typical or expected. In statistics, however, there is no single definition of average. Instead, statisticians use three distinct measures of central tendency: the Mean, the Median, and the Mode.
Choosing the wrong measure can significantly distort reality—especially in datasets with extreme outliers such as salaries, home prices, or test scores.
1. The Arithmetic Mean (The Standard Average)
The arithmetic mean is calculated by summing all values in a dataset and dividing by the total count of numbers:
Step-by-Step Worked Example:
Consider the dataset: [4, 8, 6, 5, 3]
- Count values (n): 5 numbers.
- Sum all values: 4 + 8 + 6 + 5 + 3 = 26.
- Divide by count: 26 / 5 = 5.2.
The arithmetic mean is 5.2.
2. The Median (The Middle Value)
The median is the exact physical midpoint of a dataset when ordered from smallest to largest:
- For odd counts: The median is the single middle element. In our sorted dataset
[3, 4, 5, 6, 8], the middle number is 5. - For even counts: The median is the mean of the two middle numbers. In
[2, 4, 6, 8], the median is (4 + 6) / 2 = 5.0.
3. The Mode & Range
Two additional statistical metrics complement the central average:
- Mode: The value that appears most frequently. In
[2, 3, 3, 5, 7], the mode is 3. Datasets can be unimodal, bimodal (two modes), or have no mode if all values appear once. - Range: The difference between the highest and lowest value:
Maximum - Minimum. In[3, 4, 5, 6, 8], Range = 8 - 3 = 5.
When to Use Median Instead of Mean (The Outlier Effect)
The mean is highly sensitive to extreme outliers. Consider 5 employees earning $40k, $45k, $50k, $55k, and $1,000,000 (the CEO):
| Measure | Value | What It Tells Us |
|---|---|---|
| Mean Salary | $238,000 | Severely distorted by the single $1M outlier; none of the 4 regular employees make anywhere near this. |
| Median Salary | $50,000 | Accurately reflects the true typical worker earnings. |
Whenever data is skewed (such as income or housing markets), the median provides a far more honest picture of reality.
