How to Convert Between Common Units

A beginner's guide to Metric vs Imperial: length, weight, temperature, and conversion formulas.

Metric vs Imperial: The Global Divide

Almost every nation on Earth uses the International System of Units (SI / Metric system), built elegantly on base-10 increments (millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers). Meanwhile, the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar primarily use the Imperial / US Customary system (inches, feet, yards, miles, pounds, gallons).

Because global trade, internet recipes, scientific papers, and travel routinely cross these measurement boundaries, knowing how to convert between common units is an essential daily skill.

1. Length & Distance Conversions

Length is the most frequently converted measurement. Here are the core conversion constants:

  • 1 Inch = 2.54 Centimeters (exact by international definition).
  • 1 Meter ≈ 3.28084 Feet (or 39.37 inches).
  • 1 Kilometer ≈ 0.621371 Miles (or 1 Mile ≈ 1.60934 Kilometers).

Worked Example:

Convert 5 kilometers into miles:

5 km × 0.621371 = 3.10686 miles

A standard 5K road race is approximately 3.11 miles.

2. Weight & Mass Conversions

Mass conversions are fundamental in cooking, fitness, shipping, and healthcare:

  • 1 Kilogram ≈ 2.20462 Pounds (or 1 Pound ≈ 0.453592 Kilograms).
  • 1 Ounce ≈ 28.3495 Grams (or 16 Ounces = 1 Pound).
  • 1 Metric Ton = 1,000 Kilograms ≈ 2,204.62 Pounds.

Worked Example:

Convert 150 pounds into kilograms:

150 lbs / 2.20462 = 68.0389 kg

A 150-pound individual weighs approximately 68.04 kilograms.

3. Temperature Conversions (The Non-Linear Scale)

Unlike length and weight—which use direct multiplication or division factors—temperature scales do not share a zero point. Water freezes at 0°C (32°F) and boils at 100°C (212°F). Because of this offset, converting temperature requires a two-step formula:

Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9

Worked Example:

Convert 100°C (boiling point of water) to Fahrenheit:

  1. Multiply by 9/5 (1.8): 100 × 1.8 = 180.
  2. Add 32: 180 + 32 = 212°F.

Fun Trivia: At exactly -40°, both Celsius and Fahrenheit meet: -40°C = -40°F.

The 3 Golden Rules of Accurate Unit Conversion

To prevent costly mistakes (such as NASA’s infamous 1999 Mars Climate Orbiter loss caused by metric/imperial miscommunication):

  1. Never drop units during calculation: Always write units beside your numbers to ensure correct cross-cancellation.
  2. Avoid early rounding: Keep maximum precision during intermediate arithmetic steps and only round your final result.
  3. Distinguish weight ounces from fluid ounces: An ounce of weight (mass) is not the same as a fluid ounce (volume).
